The beast and the woman are described in careful terms, to be explained later by the angel who brought John. John's vision takes him to a wilderness, where he sees the image of a woman sitting on a strange beast. ![]() This chapter begins with one of the angels who poured out a judgment bowl calling John to see a "great prostitute." This figure is another of the commonly-known symbols of Revelation, often referred to as the "Whore of Babylon." What follows is a vision-specifically meant to be symbolic, and not literal (Revelation 17:1–2). Chapter 18 will describe the fall of Babylon in a political or economic sense. Chapter 17 focuses on the ruin of "religious Babylon," an ungodly spiritual system which is at first supported, then ruined by the efforts of the beast. Before this is explained, John is shown a vision which symbolizes two additional judgments which are spread out over the tribulation. 7 And the angel said to me, 'Why do you wonder? I will tell you the mystery of the woman and of the beast that carries her, which has the seven heads and the ten horns.Īt this point in Revelation, the bowl judgments have been described, and all that remains of the tribulation is the second coming of Christ. 4 The woman was clothed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold, precious stones, and pearls, holding in her hand a gold cup full of abominations and of the unclean things of her sexual immorality, 5 and on her forehead a name was written, a mystery: 'BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF PROSTITUTES AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.' 6 And I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus. 13 These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.ġ Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and spoke with me, saying, 'Come here, I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who sits on many waters, 2 with whom the kings of the earth committed acts of sexual immorality, and those who live on the earth became drunk with the wine of her sexual immorality.' 3 And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness and I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast, full of blasphemous names, having seven heads and ten horns. ![]() 12 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. 11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition. 10 And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come and when he cometh, he must continue a short space. ![]() The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth. 9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. 8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. 6 And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.ħ And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns. 4 And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: 5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. 3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. 1 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: 2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. ![]()
